I am Yuki Nakamura. Today, Nakamura Chocolates is known for its intricate designs and flavours, but our business did not begin in a sunlit kitchen—it began in the grey, concrete jungle of Tokyo.

 

Years ago, my partner and I were exhausted "salary workers," caught in the relentless 9-to-5 grind. Looking at the weary faces of the commuters around us, we realized that people needed an escape from a sometimes monochromatic life. We wanted to find a way to break through the grey and bring colour back into the world.

 

Searching for a way to do that, my mind traveled back to a defining moment from my childhood. My father had returned to Tokyo from Paris bearing a gift of chocolates. I will never forget that feeling: setting eyes on a beautiful box, opening it to marvel at the exquisite jewels within, and tasting wonderful flavours that gave pure pleasure. Sharing them with family and friends was a profound joy. My partner shared this vision, and together we realized that this was exactly the kind of magic we wanted to create - the pure, shared anticipation that makes people feel completely present and delighted.

 

That realization became the foundation of Nakamura Chocolates, and because we were building a business so intimately tied to my own history and childhood memories, we chose my family name and ancestral crest to represent it. This represented a deeply personal promise for me. I vowed that every box we created had to inspire that same childhood wonder, every individual chocolate had to be a visual marvel, and every flavour had to taste exquisite.

 

Our journey took root in Australia, where we have been crafting chocolates since 2008. Over the years, our dedication to craftsmanship and flavour has been humbled by numerous awards, including being named a finalist in the 2019 WA Export Awards. But my proudest milestones have always been about connection. In 2017, we partnered with Hon Takasagoya, a revered 140-year-old Japanese confectionery company. Through this partnership, I had the delight of sharing our creations across the entire Japanese archipelago.

 

Today, my craft is a bridge between cultures. We champion native Australian ingredients, partner with brilliant artisan food makers, and commission local artists to bring our vision to life. Yet, for all our growth, my core mission remains exactly the same as it was on those grey days in Tokyo. Every time you bring a box of our chocolates home to your family, or gift it to a friend, I hope to bring you that same pure happiness I felt as a little girl—and add a little more colour to your world.
